Dear Parents and Carers,
At assembly this week we were able to present Sienna with her Under 11years Age Champion Swimming trophy. We thank Sienna for being patient awaiting her award. Sienna tied for this champion title with her friend and swimming rival Eva. I once again congratulate the full cohort of swimming age champions!
Learning at St Pat's
It was great to talk with some more of our students who have been recognised for demonstrating multiple attributes of St Pat's kids. We love acknowledging the great behaviours for learning and engagement under the three school pillars: Look Into Thinking; Look Ahead to the Future, and Look After Each Other. When students bring their learning journal we are able to further commend their great work with the pillar stickers. (Apologies to Matthew that you weren't photographed with your journal!)
Ian Luscombe will be at St Patrick's for two days next week, Tuesday and Wednesday. We look forward to Ian supporting us toward our aspiration of every student fully engaged in learning and general school life 100% of the time. Ian will walk alongside the leadership team and the teaching and support staff and through coaching support our learning. For new families to St Pat's, Ian is the founder of BehaveAbility with whom we have been working for 18months in support of positive behaviours for learning.
I will be in Bowral next week with the principals from our Archdiocese and our system leaders. This is an annual conference that has two purposes; Catholic Leaders' Day and the Principals' retreat. Mrs Sheahan will be leading the school in my absence.
Blessings on your weekend. Perhaps the rain will have abated and the flood levels dropped!

NAPLAN
Students in Years 3, and 5 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language and numeracy during May. Our school will participate in NAPLAN Practice Tests in Weeks 8 and 9, which are designed to give students, teachers and systems an opportunity to practice administering and participating in the online testing environment. The practice tests consist of a Writing Test for Years 5, and an Omnibus Test (a combination of reading, conventions of language and numeracy) for Years 3 and 5. As this is intended to practice participation, the questions are not equivalent to NAPLAN testing in May, and no results are available from the Practice Tests.
Writing Professional Learning
Our teachers have been participating in a CE endorsed Writing Professional Learning opportunity this term which focusses on implementing the Hochman Method, an explicit set of evidence-based strategies for teaching expository writing. The method builds from sentences to compositions and is embedded in curricula across all content areas and grade levels. The Writing Revolution envisions a day when all students acquire well-developed writing skills and the ability to think critically so that they have the opportunity to succeed.
Principles of The Writing Revolution
- Students need explicit instruction in writing, beginning in the early years.
- Sentences are the building blocks of all writing.
- When embedded into the content learning areas of the curriculum, writing instruction is a powerful teaching tool.
- The content of the curriculum should drive the writing activities.
- Grammar is best taught in the context of student writing.
- The two most important phases of the writing process are planning and revising.
