RECONCILIATION WEEK
Next week (27th May – 3rd June) is Reconciliation week. This year the theme is “Not just a word – Reconciliation takes action”
Here is what one of our Koori Students, Monique has to say about Reconciliation Week.
“reconciliation week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.” – Monique
To learn more about Reconciliation or begin a conversation in your home, with family or friends you may like to do the following:
- Listen to the song ‘Took the Children Away’ by Archie Roach
- Watch the SBS Documentary ‘Servant or Slave’ which details stories of Women of the Stolen Generation.
- Watch ‘The Rabbit Proof Fence’
- Read segments of the ‘The Bringing Them Home Report” the 1996 National enquiry into the Stolen Generations
- Read the 2020 Family Matters Report to understand the current state of affair
On 13th June there will be a celebration at the Bega Commemorative Centre commemorating the 20th anniversary of the first signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as the formal partnership between local Aboriginal people and the Bega Valley Shire Council. Dances and Musical performances will follow the official ceremony and will open the ’20 years of achievements’ exhibition.
Another upcoming event is NAIDOC Week, which falls in the winter holidays. St. Patrick’s will be celebrating NAIDOC week 21-25th June.
