FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL & CLASSROOM SUPPORT
Supporting Positive Learning Behaviours in Every Child
At our school, we believe that every child deserves the best opportunity to thrive in their learning environment. One of the key ways we support this is by setting clear, consistent expectations for behaviour that promote focus, cooperation, and resilience.
Some of the expected behaviours for learning include:
- Listening actively and following instructions
- Staying on task and managing distractions
- Using positive language and showing respect to peers and teachers
- Being organised and prepared for learning
- Asking for help when needed
These behaviours help create a calm, productive classroom where all students can succeed. However, we also understand that for some children, meeting these expectations can be more challenging.
Are You Wondering If Your Child Might Be Struggling?
Have you noticed your child finding it hard to sit still, follow instructions, or stay focused on tasks? Do they seem impulsive or easily distracted, even in calm environments?
These could be signs of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)—a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, self-regulation, and executive functioning. It’s more common than many people realise, and with the right support, children with ADHD can thrive both academically and socially.
Understanding ADHD: Screening and Support
I recently completed training in the Conners Comprehensive Behaviour Rating Scales, a widely used tool for identifying characteristics of ADHD. This assessment involves gathering observations from both home and school environments to build a clear picture of a child’s behaviour and attention patterns.
As part of my role, I can now:
- Conduct initial screeners to identify ADHD-related behaviours
- Provide guidance and support for families navigating next steps
- Assist with referrals to appropriate health professionals for formal diagnosis and intervention
Let’s Work Together
If you’ve been wondering whether your child might benefit from additional support, or if you’d like to learn more about ADHD and the screening process, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to help, and early support can make a big difference.
