When should I stop reading to my child?
The short answer - they are never too old!
Reading a book to your child is more than teaching them the skills of reading. Sharing a story builds bonds with your child and is a special time, especially at the end of a busy day. Kids want to spend time with their parents. Reading a chapter of a novel to your child in Year 4, 5 or 6 is a great way to spend time together. It also:
- Encourages reading
- Helps with comprehension and vocabulary
- Helps you understand your child’s interest
- Gives you something else to talk about together
- Can be a springboard into important conversations about characters that reflect real life experiences
